本作は天狗の兄弟が送るスローライフと彼らを取り巻く仲間たちの姿を描いた物語。米・ニューヨーク育ちの少年オンは、ある日自分が天狗の末裔だと知らされる。天狗のしきたりにより14歳の1年間、日本で暮らす兄・飯綱基（いづなもとい）と隠遁生活を送ることに。天狗といっても特別な力はなく、兄の関心はもっぱら日々の食と素朴な暮らしに向けられていた。ある時、基の背中に天狗の末裔でも珍しい、羽が生えていることを知るオン。さらにオンは基の飼い犬むぎが話しかけてくると自分に動物としゃべれる特殊な能力があることに気付く。
